Unit Description
Nurses working in a 21st century clinical setting, face many new and emerging challenges relating not only to developments in technology and medicine, but also to the social, cultural, economic, political and environmental contexts in which their work is performed. These factors will have an impact on the scope of professional nursing practice, the relationship between primary, secondary and tertiary care and the role of nursing and nurses in specialised fields.
This unit will provide students with the opportunity to explore the inter-relationship between nursing practice, health policy, and a range of social, technological, environmental, cultural, economic and political issues that influence health and health care practice.
Unit Learning Outcomes
After satisfactorily completing this unit students will have gained the ability to:
• understand the nature of policy development, political ideology and processes, and federal/state relations,
• outline public expectations of health care,
• discuss the role of health service administration,
• assess the influence of health policies on nursing practice and policy,
• examine the role of allied health disciplines influence on health policies,
• define the term ‘professional’ and the nature of a ‘profession’,
• examine the relationship nursing between the various definitions and meanings of professionalism,
• discuss the roles, rights and responsibilities of a professional and the implications for nursing,
• examine a range of environmental influences that impact on individuals and communities,
