Foundations in Gender Studies - Essay Writing Assessment answer

Assessment Task: This assignment is designed to give you an opportunity to focus on an area we have studied in the middle and later weeks of the unit in an analytical essay. It is an opportunity for you to demonstrate:
  • your familiarity with the ideas and issues discussed in the unit
  • your ability to develop an argument about these ideas and issues, and
  • your academic research and writing skills.
To complete this assignment, you should select ONE of the essay questions provided below and write a 1500-word research-based analytical essay. The task requires sustained engagement with academic ideas, reasoned argument, and reference to evidence. You need to explain why you have come to the view that you have and justify your points.
  1. Raewyn Connell argues that gender is “relational. ‘Masculinity’ does not exist except in contrast with ‘femininity.’” How does this concept apply to the relationships between hegemonic masculinity and hegemonic femininity?
  2. Hegemonic masculinity.
  3. Jack Halberstam argues that masculinity only becomes visible and legible when it leaves the body of the middle-class white man. Discuss.
  4. What role does race play in the formation of gendered hierarchies?
  5. What different elements are embedded in the notion of “sexual identity”? How does discourse work to disappear or make invisible those different elements?
  6. “Queer theory challenges essentialist ideas about gender as well as the enforcement of heterosexual reproduction.” Discuss.
  7. Is gender performative? (Note that this question requires you to engage with queer theory and Judith Butler’s work. It is a challenging question.)
  8. To what extent can what Elizabeth A. Wilson calls the “anti-biologism of contemporary feminist theory” be compared with the anti-subject position of queer theory? [This is a particularly challenging question and should only be attempted by those who feel comfortable with the more theoretical articles we have read this semester]
  9. In what ways have marginal gender and/or sexual identities been used to define gender and sexual norms?
  10. Why have feminists of colour struggled to identify with white feminism and the concept of “sisterhood”?
  11. In what ways is an intersectional approach to feminism more inclusive of different women? Should feminism try to represent all women?
  12. Second wave feminists fought for reproductive “choice.” Since the 1990s, intersectional feminists have used the phrase and fought for “reproductive justice.” What is reproductive justice? In what ways is it different than the concept of choice? What role does race and class play in these differences?
  13. In what ways have queer studies and studies in the history of sexuality helped to destabilize notions that biological sex was fixed and also undermined binary notions of gender?
  14. Consider and analyse the following: (a) Sandy Stone has argued that “In the transsexual as the text we may find the potential to map the refigured body onto conventional gender discourse and thereby disrupt it, to take advantage of the dissonances created by such a juxtaposition to fragment and reconstitute the elements of gender in new and unexpected geometries.” (b) “Trans and intersexual people and advocates have brought forth the biggest revolution in gender ideas since the second wave feminists of the 1970s.”
  15. In what ways and by what rationale are some 1970s style radical feminists critical of trans women? Discuss and analyse the debate between TERFs (trans-exclusionary radical feminists) and trans* activists.
  16. Gender binary
  17. In what ways do socially prescribed and manufactured expectations of gender and sexuality figure in intimate relations?
  18. To what extent are normative ideas about gender, race, and sexuality entwined with myths of national identity?
