You may also refer to the text as a source of supporting information, but do not use it as the main source.

The final essay will be based on the material from the three readings that you select. This does not mean that you will be merely reproducing what is in the readings, but that you will be synthesizing and commenting on the material in the readings within the context of your hypothesis.

You will notice that in Part Six of the Fit to Print guide, instructions are provided for citing sources in APA style. You are required to use this style for Parts 1, 2, and 3 of the essay assignment. Sociologists and psychologists generally share many of the conventions for writing essays and research papers. Therefore, the APA style guide is also useful for sociology students.

1. Read the section in the writing guide Fit to Print which describes “The Argumentative Essay.” Follow these guidelines in writing a proposed outline of your essay.
2. Select your topic. Familiarize yourself with the course readings relating to your topic and examine the table of contents of the Brym reader. Your topic must use three readings from the sociology database and/or the Brym Reader. You can combine readings from the Brym reader and the online databases available through the J.N. Desmarais Library www.laurentian.ca/library.
3. If you choose to use three articles from online databases for your essay, be sure to use only peer-reviewed academic journals as your sources. See “Use of Online Databases” below for more information on accessing Laurentian University online databases.
4. Once you have selected your potential sources and topic, take some time to plan your essay. You must develop a thesis to be examined in the essay. Read Chapter 1, Devising a Thesis in Fit to Print by Joanna Buckley (2013) to assist with this task.
5. Develop and submit a proposed outline of your essay based on the instructions in Fit to Print. Your outline must include your thesis statement, the three arguments you plan to elaborate on in your essay, and the sources you’ve chosen to use.

Part 2: Annotated Bibliography

This assignment should be between 300 and 600 words, must be typed with Times New Roman 12-point font, and double-spaced. Submit in PDF format by the deadline through the appropriate Dropbox.

1. Review the feedback provided by your course instructor for Part 1 of this assignment.
2. If necessary, do additional research to find appropriate sources for your essay. Follow the guidelines in Part 1 for researching databases.
3. If you use the Brym reader for essays, you need not be concerned with the online sources since all readings in the reader are appropriate for this course.
4. Once you have sourced, selected and read your three articles, create an Annotated Bibliography that consists of a short summary of each article. Focus on the aspects of the articles that are appropriate to your essay; do not include information that is not relevant.
5. After a brief summary, it would be appropriate to assess this source and offer some criticisms of it. Does it seem like a reliable and current source? Why? Is the article biased or objective? Are the arguments well presented?
6. After summarizing and assessing, you can now reflect on this source. How does it fit into your thesis statement? Is this a helpful resource? Too scholarly? Not scholarly enough? Too general/specific? Since "sociology" is a very broad topic, has this source helped you to narrow your topic?
7. Each entry should be approximately 150 words. There is no need to recreate the article in this assignment and you do not want to summarize entire articles.
