OASYS SOFTWARE SHOULD BE USED TO CARRY OUT SLOPE ANALYSIS.
As part of an ongoing earthworks assessment you are to carry out a stability analysis for an existing Victorian railway embankment.
The total length of embankment to be assessed for stability by each individual student is 500 metres, which is divided into 5 separate sections, each of which must be assessed separately. The general dimensions of the embankment are as shown in the sectional drawing in Figure 1 below:

The specific details of individual embankment sections including soil strength parameters and groundwater conditions are provided individually for each student in a spreadsheet which is saved on the Moodle site for this Module. In your analyses you are to assume that the soil conditions are uniform throughout the whole of the site – i.e. over both the full area of the embankment and to a significant depth beneath it.
Your first task as a student is to access this spreadsheet and obtain the parameters for your individual design.(PARAMETERS ARE BELOW)
Based on the information provided you are required to carry out the relevant stability analyses to produce a summary report which covers the following areas:
Appropriate calculations to determine the theoretical stability or otherwise of each section of embankment which you are looking at together with a summary report of your findings.
Your report is to provide details of the method(s) of analysis you have used together with a justification for why you have used these specific methods of analysis.

Relevant critical comments on the raw data which you have been provided with to carry out your assessment, indicating in particular what additional data, if any, would have been useful, how this data might have been obtained and whether it would have been cost effective to obtain it.

Given that all sections of the embankment have been found during a site visit to actually be stable, repeat your analysis for any section(s) that you have found to theoretically be unstable, adjusting the soil strength and/or groundwater parameters as necessary in order to ensure that your calculations reflect the fact that the embankments are actually stable.
This section of your report is to include a discussion of the proposed changes you have made in the design parameters together with a justification of these changes.

A critical appraisal of your final analysis to include an assessment of:
The importance of carrying out appropriate ground investigation in practical slope stability problemsThe possible limitations in the use of theoretical slope stability calculations
The importance of the effect of groundwater and drainage conditions on slope stability analysis

A site visit six months after your analysis indicates that a section of your embankment is now found to be unstable (the precise section is shown in the data spreadsheet given below table )
Based on the information that you have about this section of embankment comment on whether this is surprising and suggest how this situation may best now be addressed

Notes on Coursework Submission:
As noted, your submission is to take the form of a summary report on the stability of the embankment. This should be separated into sections (a), (b) and (c) based on the individual assessment tasks as specified.
Sections (a) and (b) should containAn explanation of the analyses you have carried out and why you have chosen to adopt these analyses in your designA summary of the results of the analyses including relevant computer outputIn preparing and submitting your coursework, please also note the following general guidanceFinal reports should be word processed in double spaced Arial 12 point font and excluding drawings and computer output should be no more than 10 sides of A4 in length.
It is not expected that the inclusion of drawings and computer output shall lead to the final report being significantly more than double this length.
Where computer output is included, it is important that this is done in such a way that it is possible to check BOTH the INPUT to and OUTPUT values from the software.
