Define mental health and wellbeing
Mental wellbeing is defined as a person’s capacity to manage the precariousness nature of life, while maintaining positive contributions to the wider society through emotion, behaviour and cognition (WHO 2014). In contrast, social stress theory (Selye, 1936) suggests that mental health problems are a result of overwhelming stressors that progress into an illness. Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is one such example of a mental illness that is characterised by persistant and often irrational apprehensiveness towards past, future and present events (Woodman, 1997).
AIMS OF CASE STUDY
Overall, the essay sets out to evaluate the evolving nature of healthcare management of mental health and wellbeing; using GAD as a case study. The essay begins by briefly outlining the dynamic history and the characteristics of GAD. It further delves into critically evaluating the theories that explore the diagnoses, prevalence and management of GAD with a particular emphasis on evaluating the impact of sociocultural and socioeconomic factors regarding GAD.
HISTORY
Early humans were anxious about falling prey to predators and a hyperarousal response served to keep them alert, consequently nurturing the survival of the species (Cannon 1915). It was only in 1980 (Woodman) that GAD was defined separately to other forms of anxiety disorders.
The word anxiety was derived from the Latin word anxietas which describes a “troubled” individual. GAD is distinguished from other anxiety disorders as an “Excessive worry that lasts a minimum of six months, in relation to various events” as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5). A diagnosis is confirmed if the mental diagnostical criteria is coupled with somatic symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia and muscle tension. Currently, approximately seven percent of people living in England fulfil the DSM-5 criteria for an anxiety diagnosis. Among young men the rate of incidence is
