Highlights
Introduction to the genetic disease and general description
Tips: For this section start with the basic clinical description of the disease. Also, incorporate the mode of inheritance. If your topic is a disease that has both Mendelian and multifactorial characteristics – mention it here. It would be also good to talk about the prevalence and/or incidence of the disease.
Current research on the disease
Tips: Start with an overview of the current research on the disease. You can go beyond genetics at the start of this section but then try to focus on the genetic research more than other aspects. Note that this section has 20% weightage.
The genetic basis of the disease
Tips: Ending of the last section should seamlessly lead to the start of this section. Here you elaborate on the genetic basis. For example, you can talk about the data that identified the gene (LOD score, etc) and discuss the strength and weaknesses of the available literature.
Future prospects for use of new genetic technology
Tips: This is one of the key sections. Here you have the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of genetic/genomic approaches to manage human diseases. As mentioned above, the end of the previous section should be the identification of a gap in knowledge for your disease topic. That would guide your writing for the future prospect. Some possible future prospects are:
(i) Whole-genome/exome sequencing;
(ii) GWAS studies;
(iii) Genetic Counselling etc. Please note that these are just broad ideas. You do not have to choose from this list for your book chapter. The Key is to identify gaps in knowledge for your topic and discuss your thoughts based on available knowledge. You can draw a reference from another disease and propose that as a strategy to your disease topic. The references for this section does not have to be on your topic. But they have to logically connect. Please avoid stating things without any literature evidence. For example, do not write: ‘I believe….’. Rather write: ‘Based on the work of XXXX (author et al, Year), it is plausible to use YYYY approach for ZZZZZ disease.’
Overall writing skills
Tips: Focus on simple, fact based, short sentences. Avoid ornamental English and long complex sentences. Focus on scientific accuracy and specificity in choosing your words. For example: ‘Glaucoma is the largest cause of irreversible blindness affecting 105 million people globally’ is a better expression than ‘Glaucoma is one of major reasons of vision loss affecting a large number of world population.’
