BECKTOWN BRIDGE

At 0900 hours on Friday of next week, the operation will begin to transport heavy plant equipment through the main streets of Becktown to the construction site for the new Becktown Bridge, thus enabling work to begin on the new bridge.

The proposal for the bridge was submitted by Becktown District Council in association with a consortium of organisations which have a local interest, including Becktown Heritage Society and Becktown Traders' Association, to the Millennium Commission two years ago. The commission has provided a grant of £2 million pounds to meet the costs of the new bridge.

Gentside Construction Company has successfully been awarded the contract for the construction of the bridge which was put out to tender by the council. Managing Director Bryan Smyth said: "We were delighted to have been awarded the
20 contract for the construction of Becktown Bridge."

The building work is expected to take 18 months and will provide the first direct road link between West Beckside and East Beckside, replacing the 100-year-old footbridge when it opens.
