The ‘Anthropocene’ has been defined as ‘the current epoch in which humans and our societies have become a global geophysical force’ (Steffen et al. 2007, 614). This presents a wide range of challenges and opportunities for human societies. This assessment task focuses on better understanding the environmental challenges and opportunities we face today and into the future.
In this task you will identify a distinct problem or challenge associated with the Anthropocene. You’ll make a poster to communicate the key elements of your chosen topic. You should focus your poster on a problem or challenge presented by the Anthropocene, or on a solution or response to a challenge. Either approach can work well.
In the lectures we’ll look at some examples of possible topics. In the tutorial activities we’ll explore the concept of the Anthropocene more closely. In tutorials you will work on brainstorming and discussing topics for your poster. The Week 4 tutorial (and optional Moodle Workbook) will also focus on developing your skills in producing a clear and effective poster.

Think broadly about possible topics. Use the readings, lecture and tutorial materials to help you identify an issue that you would like to explore in more detail.
Your poster must explicitly engage the concept of the Anthropocene, and how your topic relates to this concept.

Communicating in different media, including visual forms, are important skills for social scientists to develop, and they are valued in a wide range of professions beyond university.
