Project Description
For this project, you will combine your knowledge of marine depositional environments with readily available data from marine sediments to study the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), a period of Earth’s history when the planet was very different from the Earth we know today.

The LGM represents a period in Earth History where rapid and dramatic changes in Earth’s carbon cycling, climate, and oceans occurred. A great deal of our knowledge about these events comes from ocean sediments. In this project, you will use the knowledge you’ve gained and your research skills to tell a short paleoceanographic narrative. Specifically, you will either:

1) compare the LGM with another glacial period in Earth’s history (remember, even number Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) are cold periods!) using IODP data from at least 2 records from different locations for the LGM; OR
2) compare and contrast IODP data from at least 3 locations during the LGM; OR
3) compare the LGM between marine (e.g. IODP) and terrestrial records in a similar region. A few papers about the LGM or proxies you may want to look at are available on iLearn if you are stuck for ideas.

NOTE: You can also use sediment cores that are not from the IODP.
