Geraldine is eighteen years old, and has been raised solely by her mother, Brenda. They reside in a community outside Stellenbosch with many social problems such as teenage pregnancy, high suicidality, intimate partner violence, alcoholism, and poverty. Brenda is strict with Geraldine and expects her to be well behaved and responsible. Geraldine often feels torn between her mother’s rules and expectations versus her need to be independent and to spend time with her friends. According to Brenda, Geraldine has always been an obedient and respectful daughter. However, she has noticed changes in her behaviour. Geraldine seems to constantly be irritated and argumentative. She is sleeping too much, eating too little, is unusually quiet and complains about feeling too tired to do any chores around the house. Geraldine also remains isolated in her bedroom and her clothes often smell of alcohol. Brenda describes Geraldine’s friends as a bad influence and attributes the changes in Geraldine’s behaviour to them.
