Heritage speakers of German are most likely to live in English-speaking countries and the similarity of German and English results in high rates of language attrition (Sewell, 2015, p. 6). Therefore, it is important to understand the ways the German language is used by heritage speakers in order to develop strategies for encouraging them to use and maintain German. Although German is used in many different ways, this review will focus on only two. Seven studies conducted between 2009 and 2020 from peer-reviewed journal articles were included.  This literature review analyses two prominent influences on German heritage speakers’ language use which include grammatical uses and situational uses.
