Task:
ABSTRACT
Abstracts are ONLY required for Honours Research Projects and not for normal assignments or learning activities. The abstract is typed in 10-point font, single spacing and justified to both margins. The first line of the abstract must be indented (1.27cm is the default indent for most word processors). The heading "ABSTRACT" must be centred in 10-point uppercase letters. No line is left between the heading and the body of the abstract. The abstract itself must be no longer than 150 words. Normally, the abstract does not contain any references.
SAMEVATTING
The "Samevatting" is ONLY required for Honours Research Projects and not for normal assignments. The "Samevatting" is the abstract translated into Afrikaans and is typed in 10-point font, single spacing and justified to both margins. The first line of the "samevatting" must be indented (1.27cm is the default indent for most word processors). The heading "SAMEVATTING" must be centred in 10-point uppercase letters. No line is left between the heading and the body of the abstract.
Introduction
It is imperative that assignments are formatted correctly according to the Geography "house–style" and for that reason the following document has been produced to serve as a reference on how to format assignments and an Honours Research Project. The only difference between the assignment and the research project is that an assignment does NOT require an abstract. The SAGJ (South African Geographical Journal) has been used as a model. It is strongly advised that old editions of this journal (prior to 2011) are read to check on the format that is to be followed. In a few cases, it is necessary to deviate from the journal; the specific cases are outlined below. Further, it is apparent that in some cases inconsistencies exist in the format allowed in the SAGJ; in these cases this document should be followed. The most obvious difference is that the journal is printed in two columns, while Departmental documents have only one column per page. Please read this document carefully to establish where differences exist.
Main Heading
Main headings, such as "Main Heading" and "Introduction" above, must be typed in bold 11-point text and centred. The heading is typed in "Title Case"; i.e. the first letter of each word is typed in uppercase, except for connecting words (e.g. the, in, to is, from, at, of, etc.). No line is left between the "Main Heading" and the text that follows. A line is left open between the text of the preceding paragraph and the "Main Heading". The first line of every paragraph of the body of the text is indented (normally to 1.27cm).
