Highlights
Background –
Food insecurity is a severe issue being faced within Australia especially due to the global pandemic and natural disasters. The estimated food insecurity within Australia is around 5% back in 2004 meaning over 1 million Australians are facing this problem. (Food insecurity in Australia: What is it, who experiences it and how can child and family services support families experiencing it?, 2020) However due to the current variables and difference in systems such as migration and asylum seekers as well as COVID 19, the percentage of food insecurity among Australians is reported to be well over 20% as we have seen a 22% increase in the last 12 months. (Foodbank The Facts, Foodbank Hunger Report, 2020) In the food hospitality industry, companies like Foodbank (the largest food relief organisation Australia) provides vulnerable Australians help with food insecurity, natural disaster relief, advocacy, nutrition and food waste reductions while working with their network of farmers, manufactures, wholesalers, charity partners and schools. (What we do - Foodbank, How Foodbank works, 2020) This rapid increase in demand has forced Foodbank to to increase their work rate by recruiting more employees. Within this industry, companies like SecondBite, OzHarvest and The Hunger Project Australia are also participating in helping australians get through food insecurity as only 37% of the charities surveyed say they meet the “full needs” of the people they are helping which means there is many people out there who need help. (Ireland, 2020) (Food Rescue Charities, 2020)
Geographic –
1.) Density
Density was essential for Foodbank as they needed high numbers of volunteers therefore targeting a market with high density will provide better results.
2.) Region
Foodbank has their factory located in Glendenning, NSW so it was easier for the company if they targeted their volunteers near the area for ease of access. (Volunteer at Foodbank, 2020) Also due to COVID, other cities such as Melbourne as highly infected therefore risking those locations aren’t safe. Areas like Westren Sydney also have the facilities and access to resources to be able to cater to a large audience allowing for better efficiency and more people being helped.
Demographic
1.) Age
Age is a very important factor as the atmosphere in the Foodbank warehouse is a fast paced one therefore having a younger target also helps achieve efficiency. Due to the global pandemic being around, it is also safer to have the younger generation working as their chances of getting COVID are significantly lower than those older therefore allowing for a stress free environment in the warehouse.
2.) Occupation
Foodbank would prefer students as they are the ones who are enthusiastic for experience in the workforce as it helps then gain accreditation for applying for other jobs. Students also tend to have more time to help out as well as those who are unemployed as they are not committed.
