Assessment 2
Student media Log
This assessment item is based on a Media Log which will be submitted online week 10 and will be relative to Topics 2 to 12.
Students are to prepare brief summaries of recent media articles (2018 onwards) that relate to each week’s topic.
Students are to choose five topics in all.
Each summary is to be 200- 250 words long and each will be worth 4 marks.
The relevant article must be attached to the summary on submission.
Each topic chosen must relate to a different part of the course i.e. if two articles are submitted on the same topic, only one will be marked.
A free and robust media is seen as vital in democratic systems. It is the mechanism through which citizens are informed on political issues and thereby provides a solid base upon which they can make informed decisions at elections. Hence, it has often been referred to as the 4th Estate, or the fourth arm of government. However, it is not so straight forward as this suggests, as the political classes strive to get their message out to the community, whether that message is accurate or not. Politicians, particularly those from major political parties routinely undergo considerable media training and become adept at developing ‘spin’ – information that is not necessarily incorrect, but may omit key facts, have skewed facts, or more commonly – avoid taking responsibility for issues and instead blaming their political opponents.
More recently new jargon has entered the media space with phrases such as ‘alternative truths’ and ‘fake media’ used liberally by President Trump’s administration to muddy any adverse reporting. Trump himself seeks to inform the public of serious decisions using just 140 characters ie via Twitter. Arguably a less than solid base upon which citizens can make informed decisions.
The media log provides an opportunity for students to actively engage with a range of media throughout the course and thereby extend understanding of each topic studied. Students may also enhance their analytical skills through the summaries submitted as part of the log.
