Highlights
Assignment - Workplace Stress
Step 1: Stressors in your life
Drawing on your current or past work roles, identify and describe the nature of the stressors that cause or have caused your stressful experiences at work. Consider whether the stressors you have identified belong to the different stressor categories (e.g., time demands, encounter stress, situational stress, anticipation stress). Reflect on why you consider these factors as stressors.
Note: when writing about real people or situations you should de-identify the people or companies involved by assigning pseudonyms instead of using real names.
Step 2: Analysis of how stress affects your leadership style, relationships at work and life
Describe your reactions to the stressful situations you have identified in Step 1. Consider whether your reactions involve physical (e.g., rapid heart rate, nausea, aches etc.), behavioural (e.g., procrastination, eating more or less, sleep quality, using alcohol etc.) emotional (e.g., anxiety, irritability, loneliness, hostility etc.), and/or cognitive (e.g., attention, focus, memory, judgment, etc.) responses. Reflect on why you react in certain ways and asseukser@work environment and personal characteristics, traits, or attributes influence your reactions.
Analyse how your reactions to stress affect your performance and relationships both at work and in your personal life. You might want to audit your style under stress by taking this test
Step 3: Critical reflection and application
Review the stressors and reactions that you described in steps 1 and 2. You need to demonstrate that you are able to relate and apply the different concepts and theories discussed in class and in the readings. What insights are revealed to you? Below are some questions that may help prompt your critical reflection:
Do the majority of your stressors fall into one category? (see Kinman & Jones, 2005)*
To what extent does technology contribute to your stress? What is your ratio of positive and negative ICT events at work? What is the impact on your attachment to work and sleep quality? (see Braukmann, 2018)*
• Are you at risk for burnout? (see Valcour, 2016)*
How does your stress experience at work impact on your personal or family life? (see Zhou et al., 2017)* Are your current coping strategies consciously or unconsciously decreasing / increasing your stress levels?
