Gold Coast Criminology Assessment Answer

Data

Data for the current study were collected during field observations of suburban Brisbane households (N = 300). In order to test the current research questions, five variables were measured: guardianship in action (GIA), signs of territoriality, opportunities for surveillance, measures of security, and level of physical disorder. Scores for all five variables ranged from zero to 15. Distributions for each variable were visually inspected and found to be approximately normal. The current sample of households had an average GIA score of 7.48 (SD = 3.47), with relatively similar observed numbers of visible security measures (M = 7.42, SD = 3.38). Scores were slightly higher for signs of territoriality (M = 7.56, SD = 3.49), visible opportunities for surveillance (M = 7.60, SD = 3.47), and visible signs of physical disorder (M = 7.70, SD = 3.48). There were no outliers in the data set, but two cases had missing values in both the GIA and signs of territoriality variables.

Methods

The current study seeks to determine whether there are significant associations between spatio-physical characteristics of Brisbane properties and GIA. Because there are related pairs of observations for each association examined, variables are recorded as continuous data, distributions are approximately normal for all measures, but a linear and homoscedastic relationship does not exist between each pair of variables examined, Spearman’s rho was used to answer the current research questions, using a one-tailed test.

Research Question

The Gold Coast is often portrayed by the media as the crime capital of Queensland. Public debate regarding how to respond to this apparent crime problem and the resulting increased fear of crime within the community is largely based on anecdotal evidence. Hence, there is a clear need for empirical evidence on the effectiveness of current strategies employed by the Gold Coast Council to address the fear of crime among community residents.

The current study sought to answer the following three research questions:

1. Are demographic characteristics of community residents related to fear of crime?

2. Is the source of news and information about crime on the Gold Coast related community residents’ fear of crime?

3. Are community characteristics related to residents’ fear of crime?
