1. Would you feel relieved or daunted if this first assignment consisted of two words, “Define leadership”? Explain.

2. Define evidence-based management and provide examples of how Google demonstrated principles of evidence-based management. In each of your examples, identify the sources of evidence that were consulted.

3. In your opinion, as an organization, is Google effectively using evidence? How do you know?

4. At the top of page 12, how do Setty and Bock’s thoughts on the future of Project Oxygen relate to what you’ve learned in the assigned readings for Day 1 about the similarities and differences in leadership and management? Specifically:

Setty was considering a number of possible new projects for the people analytics team. One was to expand Project Oxygen to develop a deeper understanding of the specialized attributes of the most senior managers of the company such as directors and vice presidents. Davis commented, “Now that I’m a director, I need to think differently about my role. I spend time thinking about how to work with other stakeholders around the world. The management attributes are the same as other management jobs, but the delivery process is different.” Bock added, “Senior leadership often has to inspire. We are looking at the issue of how inspiration can be taught.” The peop le analytics team was discussing whether a broader study of those management and leadership attributes specific to senior managers could be done with the same approach and research methods that were used for Project Oxygen.
