OBJECTIVES

The objective of this assignment is to provide you with experience collecting data using the Global Positioning System (GPS), to integrate this data with existing data layers in a Geographic Information System (GIS), and perform a basic triangulation manually. You will be collecting your own GPS data outside, attaching attributes to describe the point data that you collect, import the data into a GIS and perform some typical analyses before producing a final cartographic product.

 

REQUIREMENTS

1. Select two types of features that are abundant outside (e.g., bus stops, parking meters, sewers, trees, signs), are spaced by at least 20 m, and are readily accessible to you (e.g., near your home, neighbourhood, a park that you can access, or at a location that you are able to visit). You will want to be able to find and map at least 8 of each type of feature in the area that you select for this data collection exercise. Once you have selected two types of features, provide brief descriptions of each to define what it is that you are collecting. Feel free to augment this with representative photographs (that you have taken) of the features.
 

2. Prepare to collect GPS data for your selected feature types. You may wish to practice collecting data, saving coordinates (or writing them down) and noting whether those coordinates are in latitude/longitude or UTM format. Head outside and obtain a satellite signal. Collect positional data for the two types of features you identified in #1. You are required to collect a minimum of 8 positions for each of the two feature types that you identified (e.g., 8 different benches and 8 different mailboxes).

 

3. Convert your collected positional data and attributes into a table in Excel such that each row will contain the information for a single location for which you collected data. If you do the minimum required, your table will have 16 rows, plus one more at the top with column headings. Label the columns: ID, Latitude, Longitude, Type, Attribute1, ..., AttributeN. Here, the “Type” describes the type of feature being mapped (e.g., all benches will have the entry “Bench”). The attribute columns are descriptors (e.g., “Material”, “Colour”) and will be used to describe each unique feature that you collected.
