Read the extracts on pages 9 - 12 of your course reader: Hesiod Theogony lines and Ovid Metamorphoses lines.
Hesiod’s Theogony and Ovid’s Metamorphoses both tell of the creation of the physical universe. Using the two extracts indicated above, and relevant modern academic sources (you must use a minimum of 3 sources, more are encouraged) to support your discussion, write an essay discussing the Greek and Roman myths of the creation of the physical universe/world.
• You will be required to: Conduct a literary analysis of each account (what is the meaning of each account?)
• Identify any differences and/or similarities (identify how the accounts are different or the same, why might these differences have come about?)
• Discuss if the accounts indicate anything about the theological or philosophical views of their authors? What impact might the intended audience of each poem have on the compilation of the poems? (Are the accounts a product of the times in which the poets lived? Is there something else going on? Consider how any differences and/or similarities may have come about.)
