Case Study

Ms Mokoena is a Grade R Art and Handcraft teacher in the rural village of Moruleng in North West Province. She is admired for her innovative ways of handling and arranging her art class. Recently, a neighbouring school made a request to her principal for her to come and address their Grade R teachers on the significance of art for children’s development, and why parents should allow their children time and the opportunity to practise it.

Amongst other things, she spoke about the significance of waste material for art development. She encouraged parents to consider donating useful, safe waste to the class for this purpose. Since then, parents have been excited about this project and regularly donate materials. Teacher Rapodile sorted and categorised the material, some for cultural and others for daily use.

Seeing that the parents were responsive to the request, she converted the room previously used as a storeroom into an art centre. Other Grade R teachers are also able to use the centre for their classes. On the walls of the art centre, Ms Mokoena has demarcated the space according to the children’s age groups, for instance, wall A to hang 3–4-year-olds’ artwork, wall B for 4–5-year-olds’ artwork, and wall C for 5–6-year-olds’ artwork. These pictures are hung after each activity.

Teacher Mokoena realised that although newly employed teachers find the art centre useful, it is often left in a messy, disorganised state, with board pins sometimes on the floor. She has also learnt that some parents donated sharp scissors, and teachers used them with learners in a previous class.

8. Report on the deliberations you think teacher Mokoena had with the parents about the role of Art and handicraft in children’s development. In your response, incorporate the following
