The aim of this assignment is to produce a journal article style report that presents and discusses the triple-bottom-line performance of one sector of the Australian economy and compares it to that of Australian households. This 'paper' will then be reviewed and marked by two fellow students, as well as an academic marker.

1. Choose one sector of the Australian economy (out of a total of 114 sectors). Refer to columns B and C in file ‘AUS-ROW_2region_SIOT.xlsx’.

2. Conduct a literature review and find up to three original references for your sector that contain information about the sustainability of the industry or products represented by the sectors. This can be about any aspect of sustainability, but at least one reference must be about environmental performance related to climate change impacts (GHG emissions or carbon footprint). Search for references in www.sciencedirect.com, www.scopus.com or through a general search on the internet. Articles from the scientific literature are preferred, but reports from the grey literature (e.g. governments, NGOs or industry associations) are allowed, as long as they are correctly cited (see below). One of these reports may be the Balancing Act report (Foran et al., 2005).

3. Summarise the information from the literature in your Introduction section of your article, pointing out the highlights with respect to the un/sustainability of your sector.

 

Abstract

The polymer product manufacturing industry (Sector 1901) is an important part of the industrial sector as it is predominantly used in packaging, construction, electronics and transportation. The performance of this sector is estimated using IOA based on a TBL performance and compared to that of Australian households. Relative contributions of carbon footprint for broad categories and scopes along with ease for decarbonization are discussed for both sectors. On repeating the analysis assuming all electricity produced in Australia is renewable energy, resulted in reduction of the total carbon footprint of the sector and Australian households by approximately 12% and 21% respectively.Error!
