Your job is to gently encourage the ‘user’ to concentrate on & complete their task, be a silent observer & take notes about usability issues

• Encourage them to do the task whatever way they like – act in a realistic way as if they are really doing the task at home.

• Pay close attention: Observe and take careful notes about where they go, what they do, what they say and how they react – glance at their face and body language.

• Be quiet & supportive: Don’t laugh, make distracting sounds or movements, don’t interrupt their thoughts, don’t talk to other people or take phone calls

• Its Ok to ask the occasional question – for example, to clarify what is confusing, what they clicked on or where they are looking/ reading on the page

• Don’t get into a long discussion about what they are doing OR how to improve it - Politely listen to their comments, then as soon as you can remind them the continue with the task

• Don’t direct them or ‘lead’ them - don’t give hints or suggestions (by what you say or the expression on your face) Taking notes Take notes as you observe where they go, what they do & how they react:

1. Write down the main steps in their navigation pathway and what they interact with:

• Note the name of link they click on & name of page they go to

• Take notes about which parts of the page they look at, and anything else they interact with

• Write down when they start a different navigation pathway & backtrack during the task (count these attempts later)

2. Identify where each usability issues occur & observe how they react and comments:

• Where they get unsure about where to go next – Note which links they consider

• Anything unfamiliar , unclear or seems confusing to the user • Observe where they slow down, hesitate and re-read words for clarity – Note any specific words

• Identify any pages that are not easy to for them scan & quickly find information on the page

• Where they make an error & what the error was (count the number of errors later)

• What they needed to ‘learn’ as they use the system

• Observe and identify what makes them irritated, annoyed , angry or seem like they want to give up

• Note what questions they ask you - when they want hints or help to do the task Tips for evaluators o If they are reluctant to criticise or make a mistake, encourage them & say: “It’s really ok to do the task and react anyway you would in real life. There’s “no right or wrong” way for people to do things.” “If you come across anything that you think could be clearer, please feel free to say whatever you like so because that means it may need to be improved. It’s Ok to criticise … You’re helping us understand how it should work for people like you who use the site.” o If they stop and are quiet for a long time, say: “Can I ask you what you are looking for here?” or “Which bit are you looking at now?”
