Advice on text selection for Part A `Select two quality, authentic texts...' Please note that tutors will not be in a position to vet your choices of texts before you do your assignment. For that reason, the following advice is provided. You will need to complete your unit readings to develop an understanding what is required, to inform your own choices for the two texts. Your texts need to make sense as complete short texts. Authentic texts are texts from real-world contexts. By way of contrast, 'inauthentic' texts may have been created only for a specific teaching purpose and no other, such as texts created to teach or test certain reading skills like phonics, or texts from commercial NAPLAN practice books. For the fiction text, please choose either a narrative or a recount. As we have already had some focus on poetry in Module 2, please do not select a poem2. For example, you might select:

• the complete text of a short picture book - a narrative or fictional recount;

• a traditional folk or fairy tale.
For the non-fiction text, please choose either an information report, non-fiction recount or explanation. A 'hybrid' text type may be suitable also, for example, some information reports about living things also include an 'explanation' section on the animal's or plant's life cycle. If you choose a fictional recount for your fiction text, do not choose another recount for your non-fiction text. For example, you might select

: • an information report about an animal or plant;

• an historical recount as might be relevant to the History syllabus;

• an explanation text about a phenomenon, such as an animal's life cycle, or a
geophysical or scientific process, or how something works. Please avoid selecting texts which intentionally subvert typical text-types, such as The very hungry caterpillar (Carle, 1969), which is a fictional recount that seeks to communicate some factual scientific concepts about metamorphosis of butterflies as well as teaching other ideas (days of the week, names of foods). Texts that are more straightforwardly recognisable as either fiction or non-fiction would be preferable, and easier to analyse.
Text chosen for fiction is: Guulaangga the green tree frog
Guulaangga was a green tree frog who liked to live in the banana trees which grew at the back of the house. It was shady and damp there.
Nearby there was a large water tank that caught the rain off the roof. Guulaangga often went swimming in there and ate his favourite food, mosquito larvae.
The children came to the farm late in the evening. They lived in the city and had rk Fl Guulaangga.
