Highlights
The Congo River Basin is a large area of rain forest in west equatorial Africa. The region has experienced many changes in land cover due anthropogenic activities including logging and mining. Much of the multi-national region has experienced political and economic upheavals in recent decades that can also impact patterns of land change. Your assignment is to use a combination of remotely sensed data and ancillary (non-spectral) geospatial data to study some aspect of land change in the region. You should pay particular attention to the characteristics of the different datasets provided in terms of resolution (spatial, temporal, radiometric) and extent (temporal and spatial).
You can choose which datasets to use and the spatial and temporal extent of your analysis, which you should justify in your report. You may find it helpful to review practical exercises for information on data exploration and processing of remotely sensed data. Several datasets are provided for you to use, in addition to which you should look for geospatial data layers that might help you to learn about land change in the region. The provided data are on the Coursework section in the class data drive. There are two time series of NDVI for the region, one from MODIS and another from AVHRR (GIMMS). The Hansen Landsat forest data on forest loss/gain, year of loss, and percent tree cover in 2000 are available as well. Additionally there are MODIS BRDF-corrected reflectance (NBAR) data in bands 1-7 and various Landsat images.
Your report should include information from published literature on the study area, as well as support for the remote sensing methods you use to analyse the data. In describing land change, you should think about why patterns appear the way they do, citing evidence from the literature about the region and the remotely sensed data. You are encouraged to be quantitative and use descriptive statistics in your report, particularly with respect to the amount or fraction of the study area of changes observed.
Initial data inquiry:
What is the spatial and temporal extent and resolution of each dataset provided? What do the pixel values in each image represent? What degree of data processing and pre-processing has already been performed? What additional geo-spatial data are available?
Study area inquiry:
What important events have occurred in the history of the region, what kinds of land change pressures does it face? What sort of spatial or temporal pattern might emerge from this that could be detected from remotely sensed data? Is land change likely to vary within different sub-regions in the study area?
Research question definition:
What types of interesting or important questions could be answered using the datasets provided and/or additional geo-spatial information? Are there particular events or patterns of land change identifiable in the remotely sensed data? Is it appropriate to define a sub-region or to look at the entire study area?
Analytical techniques:
What are the best methods to look at a particular research question? Can you compare multiple methods, datasets, sub-regions or time periods? How can you use the data you have to address an important aspect of land change?
Communicating research findings:
What context will your reader require to understand what you have done and why? What are the core publications relevant to your report? How can you best present the data and methods you used to help your reader understand what you have done? What are your most important research findings and how can you highlight these in your report?
