Preparing an estimate

This assessment is based on the case study of the Silver Stag refurbishment project and you must make reference to the information contained within this case study in your answers.

You are employed as a senior estimator for Barclay Construction Ltd, a national building contractor specialising in large industrial building projects. You are based at their Scottish office in Stirling, however due to staff shortages in the London office the managing director has asked that you transfer down there for a period of six months with immediate effect.

The Scottish office is very busy with several large projects currently on site, four of which are due for completion at the beginning of next year. They are keen to secure work for this period to ensure continuity of employment for several employees.

Barclay Construction Ltd have just received full tendering documentation for the proposed modifications to the Silver Stag restaurant.

Assessment task:

Prepare a report for your replacement in which you outline the general procedure for preparing an estimate for building works, and highlight the important factors to be considered and incorporated into this particular project before a decision can be made on the final tender sum.

In addition to an explanation of the estimating process your report should include reference to the following:

• location
• type of work / scope of work
• factors affecting labour output and costs
• factors affecting material costs
• factors affecting plant output and costs
• subcontract enquiries
• site visit report
• current and anticipated workload
• the role of the Bill of Quantities in the estimating process
• converting the estimate into a tender
• describe the procedure to be followed if no BoQ is issued with tender documentation

The report should be between 1000 and 1500 words in length.
