Case study scenario

You are the OHS professional who is looking after a foundry company who makes metal components via a casting process. In the foundry, they use a variety of different tools and equipment to make the metal components. Tools include sprays, compressed air operated tools, large machinery, furnace, shakeout using mechanical arm, and the finishing machine (using metal balls).

When you go there to visit, you find it hard to talk to the supervisor who is showing you around due to the noise in the foundry areas. You also take with you a sound level meter and find that in the main parts of the foundry, the noise is around 94 dB(A). He tells you he has been working at the factory for years and he finds it hard to hear his grandchildren, he says he has a hearing aid but it does not help that much. After the metal components are made, they go to an adjacent area to be covered with a special paint to prevent rust/oxidation. Here, the workers use spraying techniques to spray the metal.

The process they use is similar to that seen in the following video where the metal components are placed onto a production line and sprayed in the open: The SDS for the paint formulation used is on the moodle site and clean up tasks are conducted with a solution containing acetone, xylene and a mineral turpentine-based solvent to wash spraying equipment.

Task: From the Code of Practice: Managing noise and preventing hearing loss at work, complete the noise hazard identification checklist in Appendix C. Submit to moodle site assessment dropbox. Please submit your completed checklist to the designated assignment box on the moodle site.
