Assignment Task

Select one of the following research topics as the basis for your Part A- Research Task and Part B- Pitch Presentation.

1. Explore the meaning of a particular place to a person or group of people. This could be a site of cultural, historical, or religious significance, or it could be more personal. Why is the place important, and to whom? Has its importance changed over time? What does the future hold for this place? Where will you pitch this research for dissemination - does it belong in an art gallery, a museum, on radio, on a website, and why?

2. Choose any language other than English and find out what it tells us about the culture(s) where it is spoken. Some questions you might consider include: who speaks the language now? Who spoke it in the past? Is it endangered? How do people learn it? Do people who speak this language typically speak other languages too? What kinds of art and culture (music, literature, drama, storytelling, etc.) are created in this language? What would be lost if this language were no longer spoken? You might use the UNESCO language map to help you select a language: Links to an external site. Where will you pitch this research for dissemination? Does it belong on radio - allowing oral sources to be shared - or on video? Or can you plan to visualise this to new audiences in a museum?

3. Identify an example of a machine learning or artificial intelligence system that you encounter in your everyday life. How does it work? What biases does it or could it have? What are some potential consequences of these biases? How can a humanities perspective help mitigate them? What are the risks and benefits of this technology? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? How will you disseminate this research? Would a museum of science and technology be a useful place for a display? What about an interactive display?

Description

Bring your research and plan to life by 'pitching' the idea to your intended target audience in an authentic and engaging way.

Part B- Pitch Presentation

You are required to develop a 'pitch presentation' for your chosen institution which outlines the project, its rationale, primary and secondary sources, how you think it could be presented, and how it will appeal and engage the target audience. You might also consider ways in which the public audience might respond to, or interact with this knowledge on display when it is finally ready for public consumption. Remember, the exercise is a theoretical one at this stage, and the final project will not actually need be executed.

Your task is to devise the 'pitch presentation' for your project to be delivered to your target audience/institution.

Your pitch presentation could take one of the following forms

  • 5-6 minute promotional video- Including written, spoken and visual modes
  • 1-6 page promotional Flyer/Brochure- Including written and visual modes
  • Promotional Social Media site- Including posts, videos, visual material
  • Promotional Website - Including written, visual and audio communication modes
  • 5-6 minute audio promotion package- Such as a podcast, radio advertisement

You can also choose to do a variation or adaptation of any of the above presentation formats as negotiated with your Course Coordinator.

When planning and creating your pitch presentation, you need to consider the needs, interests and values of your target audience/institution and how you can best tailor your pitch presentation to engage and persuade them to back your theoretical project.
Please note: The presentation must be all your own work. If you use images, audio and video from online sources you must offer appropriate acknowledgement.
