Purpose
Case studies are analyses of situations or problems to be solved. They are used to communicate challenges and recommendations, in order to drive change. In this assessment, you will apply theories taught in Module 1 to a real work business scenario, helping you develop your analysis, problem-solving, and writing skills.
The Case Study
You are a physiologist working at a research institute studying the interactions between hormones and the nervous system during the stress response. You have been presented with a case study involving an individual named Alex. Alex is a 22-year-old university student facing various stressors, including academic pressure, personal relationships, and financial challenges. As part of your assessment, you are required to analyse how the endocrine and nervous systems collaborate to regulate the stress response.
Your Task
Answer the following five questions. Be sure to justify your responses. You are encouraged to conduct independent research, refer to your subject lecture notes, and use credible scientific sources to formulate your responses. An additional will be awarded for appropriate referencing and for clarity, coherence and organisation of your written responses.
1. Hormonal Secretion: What is the typical circadian rhythm of cortisol secretion, and how do plasma cortisol levels vary throughout a 24-hr day?
2. Hormonal Response: Explain how the endocrine system is involved in Alex’s stress response, including the release of cortisol. In your answer, you must include the hormone’s role, control pathway, location of its receptor, and physiological effects on target tissues and organs.
3. Neural Pathways: Describe the involvement of the nervous system in Alex’s stress response, focusing on the sympathetic nervous system and its effects on various organs and body functions. Discuss how it prepares Alex’s body for the ‘fight or flight’ response.
4. Feedback mechanisms: Explore the feedback mechanisms that regulate the stress response, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and discuss how Alex’s body returns to homeostasis after a stressful event.
5. Research and Recommendations: Based on your knowledge of endocrinology and the nervous system, propose evidence-based strategies for Alex to cope with stress more effectively and maintain better physiological balance. Be sure to include appropriate references to support your strategies.
