Determinants of Individual Performance
It’s late in the night, Brad looks at his watch. It’s already past 11 pm, he must leave from office now. He had just come out of his manager’s cabin after a two-hour long annual appraisal discussion. He quickly locked his drawer and left for the parking area. Pacing towards his motorbike, he was in deep thought. His manager’s words were echoing in his mind… “You are a good performer Brad. We value your contribution. But in the last year, there have been a series of lapses at your end as the team lead. In a couple of instances, I had to apologise to the customer. And you are aware of that. Even then I had tried talking to you to find out the reasons. But you refused to confide. You’re not the same enthusiastic Brad I had interviewed and hired. While I can only sense that there is something serious you’re going through personally, what I can clearly see is that it’s impacting your performance. And that’s why you’ve received an “Average” rating this time. I respect your need for privacy and space. And that’s why I suggest you see our company’s counsellor. And please don’t take it personally. You’re not just my subordinate but also a friend. We all go through rough patches and it’s fine to seek help before it’s too late.” Brad knew his manager was right. His wife’s deteriorating health and its impact on his children had been tremendous. He had not shared it with anyone at the workplace, but now it was high time. It’s been quite some time since he was juggling between managing his home and office alone. It had unknowingly started to affect his performance. He decided to not let this go on. Yes, probably his manager was right. He must seek a counsellor. Brad had always been an introvert, but he was an excellent listener. Most team members confided into him with their professional as well as personal problems. He was a good advisor. However, he found it difficult to share too much about himself due to his own shyness.
Take a moment with your group to discuss the following:
• How has Brad’s personality impacted his performance and the situation at work?
• What can be done to raise his motivation level?
• From the case, identify direct and indirect determinants of individual performance
