Using the literature on the theoretical approaches to clinical consultation, write a report of 2500 words outlining the model/s that best align with nursing practice. You
may select one model that is currently being used or you may choose to construct your own model for nursing using validated exiting models. Students should show
reasoning and connection between models and nursing practice throughout the report.

Task interpretation
The assessment task is to look at consultation theory (medical, nursing and allied health) and select a model or construct your own nursing model (using validated models) and demonstrate the connection to nursing practice. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ model to select for the assessment task. You can choose one model, or you can ‘cherry pick’ what you think is appropriate from several different models. Have a look at the article by Pawlikowska et al. (2007) for a more comprehensive overview of consultation models (see reference below). Consultation (interviewing including history-taking and physical examination) is dependent on the communication skills of the clinician so these should be addressed in your report as appropriate. The article by Cox and Li (2020) provides some insights into the importance of language and communication in the consultation process (see reference below).
