Assignment Task:
1. Concept definitions.
Before you commence any of the readings in the modules provided in this subject define in your own words (in a maximum of two sentences and in the order provided) what the following six (6) concepts mean to you in regard to thinking about your decision-making or choices in your daily activities (assuming that you are employed in a health care setting). Each definition must be independently meaningful without using of any of the words listed as parts of concepts in depicting its meaning (that means you cannot refer to, or use the words, health, service, organisation, care and management in particular, and/or single word substitutes
). No examples are to be incorporated into your definitions:
- health
- health status
- health service
- health organisation
- health care system
- health services management
if you are working in aged care, rather than health as a concept substitute aged care; instead of health status perhaps status assessment; instead of health service perhaps aged care service; instead of health organisation perhaps aged care organisation; instead of health care system perhaps aged care system; and instead of health services management make it aged services management. These changes may not work quite as well as the original hierarchy but the point is to make you consider the relationships between the components that the system you function within is based. It is also important to be clear about trying to locate what you do in a broader context. The same constraints apply as above.
Do not use examples or a circular definition. By circular I mean do not use any word/s that form any part of one of the six concepts to explain any meaning, for example, do not define health services management as "the management of health services". In this example I regard the use of "management" as circular because you have not defined what management is. Be clear about the meaning of the component words explicitly. In the health services management example, what actually comprises the management activities, roles or behaviours that explain what management entails? Each of the concepts must be complete definitions in themselves without reference to any other concept definition. (Note - this is important to establish your own baseline level of understanding. It is much less important to achieve perfect definitions than to grapple with the operational definitions which guide your actions and decisions - most students find this an eye-opener). Do not include or offer examples to illustrate your understanding in Part A, but they may be included in Part B entries in your initial reflective journal. Your entries in Part A do not have to be your first attempt but rather should represent the product
of your efforts at the point you are comfortable with them within the time constraints. You will need to balance your commencement of your reflective Portfolio as a record of your thinking but Part A entries should only be the definition.
2. Expectation of the system
Explain how your broad understanding of these concepts influences your expectation of what the health, or aged care, system is intended to do or achieve. (Note: This is your explanation of your views and what you expect operationally and is not a rhetorical or theoretical statement of the broad principles of health, or aged, care services delivery. Your response should address the broad understanding of the concepts and not individual concepts.)
3. Expectation of self as a manager
Explain how the above concepts influence what you expect to achieve as a health, or aged care, services manager. Rephrased, what is it that you would most like to achieve as a result of your managerial performance that you can link back to your general beliefs about the concepts identified above? (Note: Your expectations should be consistent with your understandings as you defined them. I will not accept 'textbook' responses about management being based upon planning, organising, implementing and controlling or variations on that theme. I want your own description of what are the important operational issues for you. Again, your response should address your expectations arising from the broad
concepts and not from them individually.)
4. Personal introduction
Commence writing your first entry in PebblePad+ (as a Portfolio asset) with a personal introduction, your background, experience, present position and employer, and anything else that describes who and what you are. You are expected to ultimately develop your Portfolio using reflection, but your early entries are unlikely to be reflective and more likely to be rich descriptions.
5. Describe and analyse your experience of developing responses to Part A
Your first entry after your introduction will describe and possibly analyse your experience of writing personal concept definitions. Did you find the task easy or difficult? Can you explain why you felt the way you did? Your Portfolio allows you to explain your deliberations and subsequent considerations or thoughts you have about them, and you can include early versions of your definitions while you grapple with their precision and clarity (essentially showing your 'workings'). Please manually date all your journal entries. Any subsequent entry/revision should also be dated but please do not modify earlier entries. If you wish to make changes please date the change and use a different font or typeface (e.g. italics), to make your later entries distinct. You can also use colour to highlight entries. Your revisions are just as important as your initial entries as they provide evidence of changes in your thinking, and evidencing that is important as your journal records your progress through the learning materials.
6. Statement of personal strategy to reflection
Please write a statement about what you expect your approach or strategy to writing your reflections will be during the session. Again this is something that you might choose to revise as you progress. I want you to explain how you think you will approach the activity, the sort of things you will look for to trigger a reflection. Please base this on your comprehension of the additional information provided in the Resources folder on reflection, the assessment rationale, marking criteria and requirements with Assignment 1 Your statement of approach should be a summary of your reading of the information provided in Resources in the Interact site on Reflection expressed in the form of your intended personal strategy.
7. Commence the development of a Reflective Portfolio (Assignment 1 is based on the first two topics but the Reflective Portfolio is maintained over the entire session to complete Assignment 3)
Commence your Reflective Portfolio. Your Reflective Portfolio should record your reactions to the learning resources and activities as you progress through the study material. These are located in the pdf Modules that have been placed in Resources. It is not intended to be a personal diary of what happens in your life that is not connected or related to your engagement with the learning resources and activities in this subject. You might comment on the learning outcomes, the introduction to the modules/topics and the commentary on the readings provided, or the Pointers for Reflection provided. They are intended to be your
signposts in navigating your way through the learning resources. Your entries can also be balanced by your responses to situations or issues that emerge from your work situation that cause you to think or react about your study and learning. Please make regular entries at least once a week as a minimum.
