229SPO Project Proposal Literature Review Writing Assessment Answer

Assignment Task: Comparing the effects of accessory mobilisations (anterior-posterior and posterior-anterior) and massage (effleurage) with knee dysfunction. Research Question?
  • Can weight status or postural sway predict either process or product measures of fundamental movement skills in recreationally active males?
  • What is the impact of goal orientation on performance in University Swimmers?
  • Is there a relationship between sprint, agility and jump performance in University football players?
  • What is the effect of increased anxiety on reaction time in novice amateur boxers?
  • Is functional movement affected by Central Fatigue in recreational Netball players?
  • What is the efficacy of electrical muscle stimulation and massage on relieving DOMS after induced muscle damage?
  • What is the effect of hypoxia and time of day on repeated sprint performance?
  • What is the effect of increasing exercise intensity on anticipation performance in high and low anxiety conditions?
  • How does changing seated position effect cervical/shoulder range of motion in recreational rowers?
  • Does taping the thigh improve concentric and eccentric muscle strength after exercise-induced muscle damage?
  • Does carbohydrate ingestion improve performance in repeated sprints durations of less than one hour in recreationally active males?
Brief Project Summary Please note a character - Should include
  • Basic design, e.g. observational/ intervention, cross over, etc.
  • Who the subjects are
  • What you are measuring, how and when (names of methods only, no details here)
  • What treatments etc. are being administered if applicable
Example 1  This is an observational study to examine the hydration status of basketball and netball players prior to matches. 20 University level adult netball players and basketball players (recruited via their team coaches) will provide a urine sample 15 minutes before a competitive match. This will be analysed for osmolality and comparative statistics used to see if there is a statistically significant difference between the two sports in hydration levels of athletes. Example 2 This is an intervention study to examine the effect of massage on hamstring flexibility in football players. 20 University level adult, male football  players (recruited via their team coaches) will have their hamstring flexibility measured using the sit and reach test prior to and after two treatment protocols administered 1 week apart using a counterbalanced, cross over design. In both protocols the subjects will use a standard warm up and have their flexibility measured. In protocol one (control) they will then lie on a massage bed for 10 minutes, while in protocol 2 they will receive 10 minutes of massage to the hamstring muscles. In both protocols they will then complete a second sit and reach test. Comparative statistics used to see if there is a statistically significant difference between flexibility following control or massage treatment. Example 3 This is a double-blind placebo controlled, counterbalanced cross over study looking at the effect of carbohydrate on glucose levels in rugby players. Male players from the University 1st team will attend the lab on 3 occasions 1 week apart. In the first visit we will measure anthropometric variables and VO2 max using a treadmill test (Bloggs et al, 2010). On their next 2 visits subjects will undertake a 80 minute treadmill protocol designed to mimic a rugby match (Jones et al., 2011). Prior to and during the treadmill protocol the subjects will be given either a 6% glucose solution or placebo solution in a counterbalanced, cross overdesign. V02, blood glucose and blood lactate measurements will be taken prior to during and after the protocol. Comparative statistics will used to see if there is a statistically significant difference between oxygen uptake and blood parameters when carbohydrate is given. Explain the basic/ background science that underpins your topic area .What are the fundamentals here? This must include appropriate references from textbooks and from review articles (you should find at least 2-3 good reviews) As part of this make sure you indicate why the particular things you are observing (key outcome measure(s) / planned interventions) are likely to be important. e.g. if your project is about anxiety in basketball in this section you would explain how anxiety influences sport generally then in the next section focus on basketball, or if your study is on carbohydrate effects in sprint exercise in this section you would summarise the various ways carbs can affect performance then in the next section focus specifically on sprint effects. In this part of your literature review you are moving from the general to the specific to explain what is already known about the subject area in relation to your specific research question. Make sure that you incorporate ‘telling the story’ as to why you will be addressing your specific research question. This is building the rationale for your study. Critical analysis and synthesis of information are key here to demonstrate your level of understanding and command of the relevant literature If you are using more than one group (e.g. males and females, different sports) and / or different experimental conditions explain why you think they will be different- you need literature to justify this. This section should have references from specific studies and if there are relevant reviews available you MUST incorporate these. You cannot present the results from just ONE study when there have been many studies in that area. Within this section make sure that you explain what gap in the literature your project will address.
