Case Study

Jackson is 3-year-old and has been at your service for about 3 months since he moved to the area. During this time you have all noticed he is not communicating verbally and spends a lot of time walking around the perimeter of the service. When you approach him, he does not really engage with you, although he seems quite comfortable in a 1:1 situation near an adult. When he is not walking around the perimeter of the service, he usually plays with the train set, pushing one train back and forth, sometimes spinning the wheels or sometimes just lining some of the trains up. When another child approaches, he becomes distressed and pushes the other child. He also kicks and screams if someone tries to touch the trains. He does not join the other children when they come together for a story or group time, often standing near the door with his hands over his ears. When you approach him and encourage him to join he screams and distracts the other children. Jackson’s mother (Kasey) brings him into the service, and she did not list a father on his enrolment form, and explained Jackson’s father left when he was a baby and has no role in his life. Kasey also has a 6-month-old baby whose father is not involved. Kasey told you she moved away from her parents as they think she spoils Jackson and is too ‘soft’ on him and a public housing unit was allocated to her in your area which they now live in.

  • Clearly identify all key considerations related to the child and families' health and socio-emotional wellbeing (i.e., risk factors)
  • Specifically identify and discuss the three most relevant issues for the scenario child with reference to scholarly and academic sources
  • Outline how you would approach the family to discuss these issues
  • Outline five strategies they would implement in an early childhood setting to support the health, wellbeing and inclusion of the child and their family/carers in all quality areas (i.e., protective factors).
  • Relevant NQF standards and EYLF (V2.0) practices and principles must be identified and linked to the strategies for the given children and their families.
  • Identify three local services you could refer the family to, and a brief (one-two sentences) description of why the service is relevant
