Health Economics SBS MSC HCM Assignment

General Instruction

• All assignments are to be submitted on 27th November 2025 on:

• Any assignment submission extension request must be addressed to Azra Fatima (Assistant Vice President – Academics) at least 5 days before the submission date, supported with valid documentary evidence.

• APA 7th Edition referencing guidelines must be followed.

• Similarity between students’ work is strictly not accepted.
  Any student found with similar work will receive Zero and fail the course.
  Plagiarism is an academic offence and will not be tolerated.

• Any revaluation request must be submitted within 5 days of grade release. Late requests will not be accepted.
  (Form and details will be shared upon request.)

• Revaluation cannot be requested for plagiarised assignments.

• Late submission within one week after deadline = 20% penalty.

• Re-evaluation request is not applicable for any failed courses.

• Any rescheduling request must be submitted within one week after the actual assessment date. Late requests will not be accepted.

• Assignment once submitted to the exam board is final for marking.

• A second extension cannot be granted without valid supporting documents.

• Students are strongly advised to keep a backup copy of their work.

• Please adhere to all above instructions. Failing to read them does not exempt students from consequences.

Plagraism

Plagiarism refers to presenting material from an uncredited source or without acknowledging the original author. For lengthy submissions and reports, students must attach an Assignment Cover Sheet declaring that the submission is their original work and has not been submitted for any other assignment.

Forms of Plagiarism Include 

• Copying another author’s work without acknowledgement

• Copy–paste without correct citation

• Copying keywords while altering sentence structure

• Copying sentence structure but changing words without credit

• Following another author’s structure, organisation, or idea sequence

• Submitting work written by an unacknowledged third party

• Copying from published sources without referencing

• Failing to use quotation marks for direct ideas

• Incorrect or missing in-text citations or references

• Missing or incorrect bibliography/reference list

• Pretending ownership of someone else’s ideas

• Allowing another student to copy work

• Falsifying results

Plagiarism tolerance for MSC is 8%.

If plagiarism exceeds the tolerance level, students may resubmit once.
If plagiarism continues to exceed tolerance, one grade lower than originally achieved will be awarded.

1. Health as a Public Good 

Is health a public good? Discuss.
Provide examples of global public good (GPG) applications related to health and explain what is needed to promote more GPGs in the health sector.

2. GATS and Health Sector Application

What is the GATS (General Agreement on Trade in Services), and how does it apply to health?
Provide examples, from a country of your choice, of GATS-linked organisations in the health sector.

3. Nurses’ Strike in England 

Write an analytical essay covering:

• Introduction

• 2–3 analytical sections explaining how strikers’ demands for pay and compensation relate to demand and supply in England

• Use at least 10 unique academic/professional references

• Include charts with data

• Present salary data and compare with similar countries

• Conclusion

4. Externalities in Health Care with COVID-19 Vaccination Example

Write an essay discussing:

• Concept of externalities in health care

• COVID-19 vaccination as an example

• Why governments pushed for increased vaccination coverage

• Real examples of different incentives used internationally

• Use data or studies, with 10 academic/professional references

• Charts may be included

• Include Introduction and Conclusion

Key administrative requirements

• Referencing: APA 7th edition.

• Plagiarism tolerance: 8% (MSC). If above tolerance, one resubmission allowed; persistent excess leads to a one-grade penalty or academic consequences. Revaluation is not allowed for plagiarised work.

1. Is health a public good? (10 marks, max 350 words) define public good, give Global Public Good (GPG) health examples, and explain what’s needed to create more GPGs.

2. GATS and health (10 marks, max 350 words) explain GATS and apply it to health; give country-specific examples of GATS-linked organisations.

3. Nurses’ strike in England (35 marks, 800–1000 words) essay format (intro, 2–3 analytical sections, conclusion). Explain strikes’ pay/compensation demands using demand-and-supply analysis. Use 10 unique academic/professional references, include charts (salary comparisons) and present international salary/data comparison.

4. Externalities & COVID-19 vaccination (remaining marks; aim 800–1000 words within total limit) essay style: define externalities, use COVID vaccination as example, explain why governments promoted coverage, show real incentive examples used internationally. Use data/studies and ~10 references; charts can be included.
