Highlights
Experience of health care describes any interaction between an individual and a health care provider. This may involve consultation, education, counseling, diagnosis, treatment or rehabilitation. Examples of a health care interaction might be going to the dentist for a check-up; asking pharmacist advice about which eye drops to use for sore eyes; receiving an immunization before traveling overseas; attending a health information session about planning a pregnancy; seeing a doctor about a sore throat; visiting a maternal and child health nurse, etc.
This task is not a professional reflection, so it does not require you to use a formal reflective model, such as Gibbs or Driscoll. However, if you look at these models it may assist you with how you might engage in a critically reflective process.
Reflective writing draws on your personal understandings and beliefs, however, in academic work it is not enough to simply give your opinion. You must demonstrate that you have explored the topic carefully and that your ideas are informed by scholarly literature.
In scientific academic writing, the accepted practice is not to write in the first person ('I', 'me', 'my'). It is however appropriate when writing a reflective piece about our own understandings or experiences. Therefore, as the health care experience is your own (or you may be describing the experience of another person), when you describe what happened it is appropriate to use first-person and this does not need to be supported with references.
When you examine this experience, exploring what happened in terms of the model of health that best describes the experience, social factors influencing the experience and any preventative initiatives, you will need to support your argument with references. This part of your task should be written objectively, not using the first person. If you state that the interaction you are exploring is an example of the social model of health, you are expected to explain what the social model of health is (with a reference or two to provide evidence to support your explanation/definition). Similarly, you would be expected to do the same if you identify what occurred as primary, secondary or tertiary prevention.
When discussing social factors that influence the interaction, you might find it helpful to provide a definition of the social determinants of health (supported by appropriate academic references), then identify which social determinants are relevant to the experience you have described and why. You could also provide evidence as to why the specific social determinant you have identified is considered a social determinant. For example, you might identify that cultural background is considered a social determinant and explain why. Then you might comment as to how this social determinant influenced the interaction. The cultural background might be a positive influence in the health interaction you described, as being an Australian seeking health care in Australia meant that you were confident in knowing who the most appropriate person to seek health care from was in this circumstance.
Remember that you only have 800 words. Structure your work to obtain the best marks that you can! Do not use up the available word count with a detailed story of the health interaction, as there are no marks allocated to this. The description of the interaction is simply the opportunity for you to create a context for the discussion. Please do not waste words describing specific conditions either, this is not relevant to this assignment. Look at how the marks are allocated to help you determine where you need to put your focus on in the discussion.
Basically all you have to do is tell a brief story about the health care encounter, then identify if the interaction describes a biomedical or social model of health care (explain what this means). Identify which social determinants of health may have impacted on the interaction (consider health literacy as a social determinant even though it may be missing from some lists of social determinants). Explain what social determinants are and why those you have identified as influencing the interaction are considered social determinants. Finally, identify any preventative care/advice that occurred during the encounter and describes this in terms of primary/secondary or tertiary prevention. Explain why you have identified it as such. (We haven't covered the concept of prevention in class, so this requires some targeted research on your behalf - I'd suggest that the best sources of information on this topic are likely to be textbooks rather than research articles). Support your discussion with appropriate academic references.
. Please use 1.5 or double line spacing (so that when we provide comments on your work it does not obscure what you have written). This also provides a good balance of white space making your work easier to read.
2. Use a sans serif font such as Arial or Verdana as these are easier to read on a screen, rather than a serif font such as Times Roman or Courier.
3. Font size should be 11 or 12 for readability.
4. As you are submitting electronically you do not need to use a cover page, nor do you need to include your name or student number in a header or footer. However, page numbers are useful.
5. Your reference list should be commenced on a new page, and please remember to follow the Harvard reference format. (Follow the link on the library page to information that explains how to do this).
