Public health is defined as the health of the population as a whole. Public health promotes and protects the health of people and their communities where they live, work, and play. Public health promotes wellness by encouraging healthy behaviors and lifestyles and focuses on the prevention of disease, disability, and death.

Who funds public health? “The differing definitions and accounting methods complicate attempts to provide a detailed, accurate, and complete applies-to-apples breakdown of public health funding at different levels of government. For example, of the $77.2 billion that NHEA classifies as public health spending, 14.9 percent is attributed to the federal government and 85.1 percent to state and local governments” (Institute of Medicine, 2012, p2). “More than three-quarter of Americans live in states that spend less than $100 per person annually on public health. Spending ranges from $32 in Louisiana to $263 in Delaware” (Weber, 2020). In 2017, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s budget was $7.1504 billion. This means that each person in the U.S. get $21.95 for public health.

As I read article after article, my heart dropped with each one. Funding for public health has decreased every year. When public health is working, nothing happens. This is good. This means public health is working. We are educated the public and preventing disease, which is their goal. Because everyone sees nothing happening, funding is cut. This is seen as it is not needed. “The Affordable Care Act established the Prevention and Public Health Fund, which was supposed to reach $2 billion annually by 2015. The Obama administration and Congress raided it to pay for other priorities, including a payroll tax cut” (Weber, 2020). This is so disheartening. Unless you educate yourselves or have a reason to be interested in public health, this information slips through the cracks.

 This weeks discussion will focus on "why does public health have so much difficulty maintaining governmental support of its central role in maintaining the health and well-being of the American people"? As the first sentence of the paragraph states, it is truly sad that a pandemic reveals just how unorganized health care is in America. There are several factors that can contribute to this answer. Some are political reasons, financial and some personal reasons as well. Their is also a lack of communication between public health officials and government officials. 

Last but not least, we can not overlook the increase in the illnesses and acuity that is sometimes faster than the treatment  of certain populations. Indeed the government plays a role in supporting the health of the American people. Within the government we find data that provides information on certain illnesses and who is being affected and the treatment methods. OSHA ( Occupational Safety and Health Administration), DHEC (Department of Health and Environmental Control), the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), and the WHO ( World Health Organization) all have a major part  and responsibility in collecting data, performing research, maintaining public awareness, and promoting healthy lifestyles among the public. If their is a breakdown in the communication of any of these governing agencies, then their is a breakdown in assisting the public.  Then of course there is the financial aspect of providing healthcare. In todays society, healthcare has become increasingly expensive. The more demand on healthcare the more expensive it becomes.

"Currently, the United States is the only wealthy industrialized country that has not achieved universal health coverage. The nation's existing health care system is inefficient, unaffordable, unsustainable, and inaccessible to many"(Crowley, Daniel, Cooney, Engel, 2020). All of these factors contribute to the lack of care the American receive when it comes to health care. The last factor I feel is a matter of political opinion. For example, their is the never ending battle of whether or not to allow abortions, legalizing Marijuana, and assisted suicide. These are just  some  of the  topics I call political because I feel as though political parties allow their titles, positions, and political affiliations  to get into the way of making sound decisions that will impact the American people when it comes to healthcare.
