Task: Mandatory Nurse-Patient Staffing Ratios There is much evidence to suggest that in public, private and aged care sectors in Australia nurses are over worked and continually express serious concerns for patient safety. In response to this there has been much debate about nurse to patient ratios, namely the number of patients that could safely be allocated to a single nurse, with the Qld Government recently legislating nurse to patient ratios of 1:4 in all public hospitals. The Federal Government is now considering recommending the implementation of standard legislation on nurse to patient ratios for all of Australia. Therefore, the Brief needs to consider the various current policies that are in place in both public and private hospitals across all jurisdictions and draw comparisons with legislation from other OECD countries. Finally, you are required to provide a series of recommendations for the development of a single national strategy on nurse to patient ratios.
