Assignment

After reviewing the keynote and studying the readings, you should now be ready to proceed with your assignment. In this assignment, you will conduct an organizational analysis based on what you have learned from the readings in this unit. All assignments are to be submitted electronically within the course. Because the faculty receive many of the same assignments a file naming format is established for all student submissions.

Introducing the Organization

Identify the organization you will be using for this analysis. Provide a basic introduction to the organization. Give an overall description of the mission, values and community work of the organization. Describe the size of the organization.

Is the organization a for-profit or not -for profit-structure? Evaluate the Community Needs assessment for the facility and/or the annual report or if the organization is a for-profit, the annual report for shareholders. What opportunities for the future work of the organization are identified?. Can’t find the Community Health Needs assessment for a not-for-profit facility? Look at other information available on the site and summarize what you can and note the report is not readily available. Interestingly, the report is required every 3 years and should be available but you may find the facility you are reviewing is out of compliance.

Culture

Based on the required reading for this module Transforming nursing work environments: the impact of organizational culture on work‑related stress among nurses:A systematic review discuss how the organizational climate (OC) is perceived to impact nursing worked related stress. Which of the four primary types of OC discussed by Kiptulon et al. (2024) are observed in the hospital?

Brief Summary of the Assessment Requirements

The assignment requires the student to conduct a comprehensive organizational analysis based on the concepts and readings covered in the unit. After reviewing the keynote lecture and assigned readings, the student must apply theoretical insights to assess the structure, culture, and community engagement of a selected healthcare organization.

The key components that must be covered include:

Key Pointers to Address in the Assessment

  1. Introducing the Organization

    • Identify and introduce the chosen organization.
    • Describe its mission, values, community roles, and organizational size.
    • Identify whether it is a for-profit or not-for-profit structure.
    • Review the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) for not-for-profit organizations or the annual shareholder report for for-profit organizations.
    • Highlight future opportunities identified in these reports.
    • If the CHNA is missing, summarize the available information and mention non-compliance.
  2. Organizational Culture

    • Use the required reading: Transforming nursing work environments: the impact of organizational culture on work-related stress among nurses A systematic review.
    • Discuss how the organizational climate (OC) affects nursing work-related stress.
    • Identify which of the four OC types described by Kiptulon et al. (2024) are present in the hospital and provide examples.

How the Academic Mentor Guided the Student

Step 1: Understanding the Task and Setting Up a Structure

The mentor first helped the student break down the assignment into logical sections:

  1. Introduction of the organization
  2. Review of CHNA or annual report
  3. Identification of future opportunities
  4. Analysis of organizational culture
  5. Link to required literature
This structure ensured the student stayed aligned with assessment criteria.

Step 2: Selecting and Researching the Organization

The mentor guided the student to choose a healthcare organization with accessible public information.
They advised:

  • Visit the organization’s official website
  • Locate mission, values, and community activity pages
  • Download and review CHNA or annual reports
The mentor emphasized verifying whether the organization was for-profit or not-for-profit, as this determined which documents should be reviewed.

Step 3: Writing the Organizational Introduction

The mentor walked the student through constructing a clear introduction:

  • Begin with the organization’s background
  • Highlight its purpose and community involvement
  • Explain its size (services, staff strength, facilities)
This ensured a strong contextual foundation.

Step 4: Assessing the CHNA or Annual Report

The student was shown how to:

  • Identify key areas of need from the CHNA
  • Highlight community priorities, health disparities, and strategic goals
  • Identify opportunities for improving services or expanding community impact
If the CHNA was not available, the mentor advised:
  • Summarize any website information
  • Note the lack of publicly available CHNA and briefly discuss compliance expectations

Step 5: Analyzing Organizational Culture

The mentor helped the student interpret the required reading by Kiptulon et al. (2024).
They explained how to:

  • Connect theory to real organizational observations
  • Identify signs of the four OC types (e.g., clan, hierarchy, market, adhocracy)
  • Discuss how each type influences nursing work-related stress
  • Provide examples from the chosen hospital environment
This step allowed the student to demonstrate critical thinking.

Step 6: Integrating Theory with Practice

The mentor emphasized linking:

  • Organizational findings
  • Theoretical models
  • Insights from the systematic review
This strengthened academic rigor and demonstrated applied knowledge.

Step 7: Review and Refinement

Finally, the mentor assisted with:

  • Editing for clarity and coherence
  • Ensuring the paper met assignment guidelines
  • Checking citation accuracy and academic tone
