1. For each of the following systems, give a typical example of an application of mass transfer with chemical reaction: (1) gas-liquid systems, (2) liquid-liquid systems, and (3) gas-liquid-solid systems
2. Mass transfer phenomena are encountered in many fields of industry. In particular, separation processes that constitute the vast majority of industrial processes are based on the physics of mass transfer and their design and optimization depends considerably on the knowledge in this field. These problems are the subject of research of the phenomenon named convective mass transfer. Define convective mass transfer and discuss the two main types that lead to convection.
3. Many theories such as the boundary layer, film-penetration, surface-stretch and others are available to explain the behaviour of mass transfer coefficients. The theories are based on both molecular and turbulent diffusion. Explain and/or describe the three mentioned theories.
4. Industrial processes in chemical engineering or laboratory operations in which heat or mass or both are transferred from one fluid to another take place on batch and continuous basis.
However, due to various demands in industries most of the operations are carried out on a continuous basis. Such continuous operations are carried out on counter-current and co-current mode. In these operations, the concentration of each phase changes with position.
Note : State all the assumptions and clearly define all nomenclature used.
5. Chemical processes which incorporate diffusion usually involve chemical reactions. Often diffusion and reaction occur in the same region, and the two rate phenomena are coupled so closely that they have to be treated simultaneously. “Mass transfer with chemical reaction” is, indeed, an example of a topic which does not fall entirely within the province of either a chemist or the conventional engineer, because it requires simultaneous consideration of molecular diffusion, fluid mechanics and chemical reaction kinetics, thus becoming a typical and classical chemical engineering topic..
Assume that you are a newly employed Chemical Engineer and your supervisor wants to test how best you understand mass transfer concepts through the following question. Let the chemical reaction of the components of species X with dissolved components of species Y be governed by the following equation:
X + uY
Assuming that species X are consumed through a first order reaction derive an equation for the molar flux of X based on the film theory. State any assumptions and define any nomenclature used.
