PLEASE NOTE as per Victoria University Policy that your essay WILL NOT be marked if it is uploaded 3 days after the due date
Late penalties apply at the rate of 5% of the overall mark per day – eg. 2 marks per day for this assessment as it’s worth 40% of your overall mark

How to conduct a boolean search:
The staff at the learning hub are mainly 2nd & 3rd year VU students who will help you with unpacking and understanding your essay topic, with Harvard referencing and with finding information on the VU library website etc
The VU library website is an outstanding source of information – login to the library website and scroll down to databases A – Z
To find Primary sources such as Case law and Legislation – the data bases you may look at include ‘Casebase’ & ‘Austlii’
To find Secondary sources such as journal articles etc the data bases you may look at include ‘Hein Online’, ‘Westlaw’, and ‘Lexus Advance’
Use the key words of your topic to search the databases
Your VU PowerPoint slides & the readings listed on slide 2 can also be used to start your ideas
Write in the 3rd person – this isn’t a reflective piece of writing so no use of the word “I”
Write from both sides of the topic and then in your conclusion you may give your final analysis based on your research
Each topic essay asks you to critically discuss the topic sentence – what does this mean? How do you critically discuss the topic that you are choosing?

There are lots of online resources that you can read to understand how to “critically discuss a topic”
Look at journal articles that are online and copy their “style” of writing
Their use of subheadings to guide the reader
No more than 4 – 5 sentences per paragraph
Use commas and full stops at regular intervals
For a 1500-word essay l recommend that you use a minimum of 6 different references which is around a credit mark – use more references if you wish to get a HD mark in this area of the Rubric
The presentation or the look of your essay is very important
I would recommend that you use Arial font size 11 but you may use whatever you’re comfortable with
Plan your essay and attach a word limit to each part – for example:
Introduction - 15% of your words – 225 words
Conclusion - 15% of your words – 225 words
Body of your essay 70% - 1000 words
Introduction – take your reader on your particular journey and let them know what you’ll be discussing
Body of the essay – start using your sub-headings and your resource material
Conclusion – finish your essay by reiterating or summing up what you have written and don’t introduce any new material in your conclusion
Start to extend and use new terminology in your written work such as: In contrast, Thusly, In essence, Essentially, Consequently, Ultimately, Juxtaposed with (contrasted), Notably, Axiomatically (clearly)
Think about what time of the day you work best – your best time might be between 12pm and 4pm – be careful not to work past midnight – you may be too exhausted to do your best work
Spread your essay workload over several days rather than try and cram writing your whole essay into one day
