Assignment Task

Heliocentric model

• Skills: You will argue the validity of the heliocentric model using modern physical evidence.

• Knowledge: This assignment will help you articulate the proof we have assembled about Earth's position and motion through space.

Task

Suppose you could travel back in time and show the ancient Greeks one observation from modern times to accept the Sun-centered model.

• Choose one modern observation that you believe would convince them to abandon geocentrism and embrace heliocentrism. (4 points)

You may only choose one observation! It must be a single piece of evidence, so choose wisely.

  • You will receive 2 points for specifying the observation.
  • You will not receive points if you try to share multiple observations time travel is very restricting :0).

Your observation must be physical evidence, meaning evidence from a direct image or experiment. (Unfortunately you can't simply show a diagram of the solar system.)

  • You will receive 2 points for including physical evidence.
  • You will not receive points if your evidence is unphysical.

• Write at least 50 words explaining why you believe your evidence would convince them. (4 points)

You will receive 4 points for explaining your choice.

  • You will not receive points if you describe why your observation is convincing.
  • You will not receive points if you don't explain, or if your total description is less than 50 words.

• Comment on two classmates' observations offering your opinion on whether you think they are convincing or not. ap2 points o You will receive 1 point each for commenting on each classmate's lifeform. Please avoid comments such as "I agree" unless you are describing what aspects of their choice you agree with.

You will not receive points if your comment is not specific.

Criteria for Success

Let's say that the instructions for this post were reversed (an ancient believer in geocentrism had to convince a modern day scientist to abandon the heliocentric-view). Here is an example of a post that would score full points, with a comment that would also score full points:

If I had to convince modern scientists that the Earth is the center of the universe, I would choose to show them the lack of stellar parallax. if we are really orbiting the Sun, we should see o difference in the stars' positions during the year; since we can't detect any change, we must not be as far from the stars as they say we ore. I think this will convince modern scientists that everything revolves around us because they haven't found anything to explain the stars' lack of motion. Comment:

Good point! Although I think scientists would say that the stars are too far away for us to see stellar parallax, so they might not be convinced. The post would score full points because it named a specific, physical observation, explained why, and met the word count. The comment would score full points because it specified why the person disagreed with the observation. Click this discussion board link to make your own post!
