Assignment Task

Assessment Task: Blog post of social policy analysis
Task description - Blog post of social policy analysis. [This is the information for BSW with Honours students]

You will work in pairs (or small groups) in a collaborative partnership for this assessment task.
You will use a policy analysis framework (McClelland and Marston, 2014: 46-49) to analyse an important social policy. As part of your analysis process, you will consider a range of perspectives (including lived experience perspectives and the decolonisation agenda in social work) to suggest options to improve the focus and outcomes of social policy.

You will then each write up your analysis and suggestions as a blog post that could be used to inform and influence how this issue is understood in the community.
Key information about this assessment task

Working in a collaborative partnership: You will work collaboratively (in pairs or small groups) to locate and share resources and to undertake your policy analysis. You will then each write up your own individual account of your analysis and suggestions as a blog post - you will be assessed on your individual post (assignment).
The important social policy: You will analyse the ParentsNext policy. It sits within the broader 'Welfare to Work' policy. There is more information about ParentsNext below.
The policy analysis framework: You will use the 'policy analysis' stage of the 'simplified framework' set out in the Week 9 reading (McClelland and Marston, 2014: 46-49).

This involves the analysis of:
Policy definition (field of policy, aims/goals & objectives, policy instruments)
Policy context (historical, social & economic, ideological & theoretical, political, and institutional/welfare state contexts)
Policy impacts (target group, outputs & outcomes, costs & financing arrangements, groups affected)
Policy options/alternatives (consider alternative policies in terms of effectiveness, equity and efficiency)
In addition, you will also assess how well the policy aligns with human rights and social justice and argue how your recommended options/alternatives align better with human rights and social justice.

An example of a policy analysis using this framework: In the Week 9 reading, McClelland and Marston work through the analysis of community aged care policy using the 'policy analysis' stage of the framework. Please also see your Week 9 MyLO resources for information about analysing social policy.
Your analysis must be evidence-based: You will need to use evidence (referenced) to develop and support your analysis (and your points and arguments). There are some starting resources for you below. But these are just to get you started - you will need to undertake your own searches to locate articles and other reports to develop and support your policy analysis.

Writing your 'blog post': When writing your post, think of this as an evidence-informed opinion piece for a site such as The Conversation. The idea of framing this as a 'blog post' is to encourage you to use a format and writing style that moves beyond a 'student assignment' to one that is engaging and accessible - and one where you adopt an evidence-based position (view) about the policy (or some aspect of it). BUT, this is an assessment task and you must conform to the requirements as set out in this document. There is more information on writing your blog post below and we will be working on this in class.
Submitting your 'blog post': You will submit your blog post to MyLO Assignments for marking. OPTIONAL: After marks are released, there will also be a MyLO Discussion where you can post your document, if you would like to share it it with your peers.
