Identifying hazards and controlling risks Case Study
Tram Vo has been working as a Dental Lab Assistant for three months. The surgery is located in Belmont with three dentists, three dental assistants, two dental technicians, one dental lab assistant and a receptionist. Tram normally pours impressions and trims models. The surgery was very busy last week as a dentist were fully booked. Last Friday at 3pm Tram was assisting the dentist in polishing of a denture after an adjustment. He was working on the lathe in the wet lab as the two dental
technicians were too busy and asked him to do it.
The electrical cord of the lathe was in poor condition and was lying in water on the workbench. Tram received an electrical shock as he switched the lathe off against the wall. The RCD prevented Tram from being killed but he did receive minor burns to his hand which required treatment by a nurse at the Royal Perth Hospital emergency section. He was sent home needing no further treatment. There were no witness as Tram’s supervisor Jenny, one of the two dental technicians, was busy working in the waxing room.
