A new dam has been proposed in a deeply incised river gorge located on the outer limits of western Sydney. The gorge is approximately 300m wide and 100m deep. The geology exposed in the very steep valley slopes is Hawkesbury Sandstone which comprises horizontally bedded, medium to coarse grained quartz sandstone. Within the Hawkesbury Sandstone there are some 200-1000mm thick laminated mudstone and siltstone beds spaced vertically between 10 and 30m apart. The structure in the sandstone comprises bedding surfaces spaced between 0.6 and 2m apart and sub- vertical jointing spaced 2 to 20m apart. In-situ stress testing from nearby projects suggests a high horizontal stress field in the region at approximately 2.5H:1V running perpendicular to the valley.
a) Draw and label a sketch cross section of the river gorge setting illustrating a conceptual understanding of the main geological features that may impact on design of the dam including the influence of the high horizontal stress field on the rock mass conditions.
b) Using your ideas for the conceptual model, outline your general recommendations for planning of a site investigation for the dam.
Q 2 A new resort is proposed on the edge of a Late Tertiary aged basalt plateau. The site is located in an intra-plate tectonic setting. The geology comprises a mix of basalt flows, tuff lenses, scoria cones and maar complexes which have been emplaced over a sedimentary rock sequence. The proposed resort development will include a series of two storey apartment buildings to be located on the upper slopes of the plateau edge with a golf course and a 30 m high, earth embankment water supply dam on the plateau surface.
