Case 2
The High Price of French Fashion at Chic-Chic Fabrics

In March 2017, French fashion designer and clothing manufacturer Chic-Chic Fabrics found itself in a major dispute. Chic-Chic Fabrics is one of the leading brands in the French fashion industry. The case centred on the understanding of ethics and corporate social responsibility at Chic-Chic Fabrics. The controversy began after Chic- Chic Fabrics’ management announced that it would make 1390 employees in France redundant. Chic-Chic Fabrics’ management justified the move by stating that it was outsourcing its manufacturing division to Cambodia and Vietnam. Management claimed that labour costs were at fraction of those in France. It also emerged that in the two years leading the management decision on outsourcing, Chic-Chic Fabrics had granted a large pay increase to its CEO, Mr Pierre Ardito. In fact, the payment Mr Ardito received more than doubled. On top of that Mr Ardito received a generous bonus.

During the same two-year period, Chic-Chic Fabrics had received  € 21 million in government assistance from the French state. The case had received widespread media coverage inside France and throughout Europe. It caused public outrage particularly over state, i.e. taxpayer, support for Chic-Chic Fabrics and the more than generous rewards given to Chic-Chic Fabrics’ glamorous CEO, Mr Ardito. The president of the European Trade Union Federation, Mr Luca Visentini  stated publicly that “corporate France has lost its moral compass”. Politicians from all sides of France criticised Chic-Chic Fabrics and Mr Ardito. France’s fashion industry trade unions, the Fédération Française de la Couture together with the Trade Unions International of Transport Workers, threatened to boycott the shipping of manufacturing equipment offshore. In addition, French consumer groups called on people to stop buying products of Chic-Chic Fabrics.
