Summary

As the elderly population expands, the incidence of hip fractures is expected to rise accordingly. Studies show that frail elderly individuals who experience hip fractures face elevated mortality risks, especially when compounded by multiple chronic health conditions (Nijdam et al., 2022;Tay, 2016). This project will explore the available literature and highlight the importance of prompt non-surgical management consultation for elderly patients and family coping with hip fractures. Furthermore, it will examine the crucial role nurses fulfill in recognizing and advocating the provision of palliative and hospice services for this vulnerable demographic. This paper will be guided by the integrated literature review framework developed by Whittemore and Knafl (2005).

Aim(s) and/or Question 

Is non-surgical management of hip fracture in frail elderly patients a viable question(s) treatment option compared to surgical management?

The aim of this review includes.

1. To explore how Neck of femur (NOF) fracturs impact patients' wellbeing and provide vital evidence-based information to decision makers to make informed decisions regarding surgical or nonsurgical management plan.

2. To provide and highlight information regarding nonsurgical management plans in NOF fractures to help provide patient-centred care.

Objective

1. Review the available literature around NOF fractures in the elderly and surgical versus non-surgical interventions.

2. Provide recommendations in terms of patient-centred care, research, and education. 3. Propose to provide a broacher to assist family members in making informed decisions, highlighting the risks and benefits of NOF fracture surgical and nonsurgical treatment whilst focusing on the patient's quality of life.

Methods

The project will utilise the framework developed by Whittemore and Knafl (2005) to meet the listed objectives:

1. Identified issue: More research and information are required to assist family members and/or other decision makers to make an informed choice as to whether the elderly patient with a NOF fracture could benefit from a surgical or non- surgical management plan.

2. A literature search is undertaken, with guidance from a research librarian Amy. The process refined using identified databases search using keywords, search terms and inclusion criteria.

3. The literature is appraised. A mixed methods appraisal tool will be useful to cover multiple research designs.

4. A thematic analysis will be employed or other qualitative analysis techniques to identify common themes, patterns, and discrepancies research.

5. Research and information will be appropriately stored, and graphs/tables will be utilised.

6. The literature is analysed to ensure the information is evidence-based

7. The presentation format will encompass an integrated literature review, adhering to the requisite standards for potential publication. Subsequent to this review, the findings will be utilised to create a brochure aimed at providing health information to patients and their families.
