The aim of this unit is to develop your understanding of the use of 3D practices in interior design. 3D practices are found anywhere within interior design. Space is three-dimensional, wherein form, shape and size occupy a space. You should thus carefully consider how the application of materials and FF&E to any given project works within all the dimensions of a particular space. Additionally, it is worth noting that materials have different requirements if applied to different surfaces (vertical or horizontal) or to different functional areas.

Basically, 3D interior design is the representation of a fully furnished and decorated room, including lighting, textures and materials from a 3D perspective. By researching historic and contemporary kitchen designers / manufacturers, you will develop an understanding of materials, practices and techniques within kitchen design. This understanding will widen your skills and knowledge in spatial awareness and planning. Through further research and experiments with shape and form, you will be able to explore a wide range of materials, processes and techniques and how they are used in the production of 3D items.

This unit encourages you to be creative within the context of a given brief. It also encourages you to explore and develop your own creative design for a larder unit through the application of form, shape, materials scale and health and safety legislation. Throughout this unit, you will use your sketchbook to document your research and design development and you will produce scale drawings, a model and a prototype before creating a final presentation of your work.

By the end of this unit you will be able to:

1. Explore work of 3D practitioners through research into historic and contemporary contexts

2. Investigate 3D materials, techniques and processes to produce work in response to a brief

3. Present 3D outcomes through display and interaction

4. Evaluate outcomes and working practices to inform future development

Scenario (Context)

Your clients are a wealthy couple in their late forties who are trading up to a large four-bedroom house in an exclusive estate in your hometown. The clients are both professionals with well-established careers that can work from home a few days a week. They enjoy travelling, entertaining, cooking and the outdoors. Their children, a boy and a girl, are both in their teens with busy social and sporting calendars.

The house that they have bought is in the early stages of construction and the clients are keen to get you, the interior designer, to help them with the design of their large kitchen. The client requests that the space is both functional and comfortable for a family of four people. Even though they have no specific style preferences, they do want a large larder unit included in the design (please see the supplementary document associated with this assignment for more information about larder units).

The design requirements for the kitchen are:

• Suitable for a family environment
• Hard wearing
• Practical
• Easy to clean and maintain

You can find a floor plan of this kitchen with the assignment.

Please note that although this plan shows the kitchen/dining room and the utility room, you are only required to design the kitchen area of this space. You should draw the outline of this space as it is and leave the utility room and dining room area empty. Structural changes should not be made to the floor plan since this is outside the scope of the interior designer's role.

Task

1. Before you can design this kitchen, you must explore the work of a variety of kitchen designers / manufacturers in historic (since 1950) and contemporary contexts. Your research should emphasise the design as well as the 3D materials, techniques and processes used. This research should help you to develop ideas for the kitchen design for your client, including materials and production methods.

Show your research within your sketchbook and discuss the following through annotations and visuals:

• The historic or contemporary context in which a kitchen designer / manufacturer designed the kitchen
• The different materials, techniques and processes (e.g. manual, handmade, machine fabricated or mass produced) used to produce the kitchen
• How the different materials, techniques and processes used by different kitchen designers / manufacturer compare to each other

2. In this task, you will investigate a range of 3D materials, processes and techniques that could be used for this kitchen design project. Throughout this task you should demonstrate a professional approach in researching, developing and producing the final work.

Using your sketchbook, document your research into:

• Work surfaces
• Kitchen door and drawer fronts
• Kitchen carcasses (the body of each cabinet without the doors or drawer fronts)
• Splashbacks
• Wall and floor materials (and their suitability)
• Equipment (e.g. dishwasher, oven, fridge, freezer)
• Fixtures and fittings (e.g. taps, lights, switch plates, cupboard handles)
• Larder units and the interior fit out (this includes the amount and arrangement of shelving, pull out drawers, fruit and vegetable storage baskets, etc.)

Within annotations, analyse the following:

1. How durable are the materials, fixtures, fittings and equipment? How easy is it to clean and maintain these?

2. How easy is it to use the fixtures or equipment?

3. Are the materials, fixtures, fittings and equipment suitable for a domestic kitchen?

4. Will the style become outdated quickly?

5. How should a larder unit be laid out internally?

6. Health and safety regulations that apply to the materials, fixtures, fittings and equipment (e.g. the slip rating of flooring, the location of a gas hob below a window or electrical sockets near a sink)
