By using primary sources from digital databases such as those of the NSU Special Collections and Archives, students will consider the significance of the featured Native American historical figure as a trailblazer. Each student will prepare, write, and submit a short biographical essay based on their research (500-800 words) citing at least one digitized primary source along with at least one image/photograph of the historical figure. Students will share their work with a small group discussion board for support and peer review. Their research must include both primary sources and secondary sources. These forms explain the key parts of the research project and the final draft for it, which work towards the following instructional method of this course: We will use historical analysis and contextualization, recognizing perspectives and interpretations, in a research project that focuses on Native American historical figures with ties to the Cherokee National Female Seminary,
Northeastern State University, and/or Oklahoma more in general. Students will produce a biographical essay of local Native American trailblazers that the professor will consider as a possible entry and content for a developing online thematic research collection featuring histories and historical perspectives of Native American and Indigenous peoples in Tahlequah and contiguous regions. If students have a strong preference and ability to study an influential Native American who does/did not have direct ties to NSU, Oklahoma, and/or the former Indian Territory, students could make a proposal to the instructor for approval.
