In this exercise your task is to describe the journey that a particular place on the earth (the location of a city) has taken over the past ~540 Ma (i.e., during the Phanerozoic). First, you need to choose a place from the list below, and then describe where that place has been since about the beginning of the Phanerozoic Eon. You’ll be evaluated on

1. How well you track the latitude of your city over time,

2. How well you describe it’s relationships to other land masses, 

3. The relevance of the comments you make on how the variations in latitude and overall location might have affected the climate of your city over time.

This exercise involves fieldwork.

1. Collect samples of any two of the following rock types from outcrops, stream beds, beaches or other suitable locations:

A. intrusive igneous rock (such as granite or diorite),

b. a metamorphic rock such as gneiss, schist or slate, or

c. any sedimentary rock. Using a hammer, break the rocks so that you can see what they looks like on a fresh surface.

2. Describe where each sample was found (e.g., name of river, beach, highway, nearest town etc.) (1 points) and briefly describe the sample location(s).Was the sample collected from a rock outcrop, stream bed, beach, etc.? Take a photo of the sample site(s) (2 points) that includes enough of the background to show the type of setting. See example below.
