To write an illustrated and appropriately referenced essay of  words. Select an example project or concept from the lecture series. Using this as a case study, write an essay which critically investigates relationships between theory/ideas and architectural design/practice. The theory/ideas explored should relate to modernism, postmodernism or contemporary ‘metamodernisms’. In this module you will be introduced to four critical approaches:

1. Removed critical analysis (secondary research) - library-based study, using books and articles, engagement with theoretical ideas.

2. Direct engagement (primary research) - going somewhere relevant to your essay question and writing in response to being situated there.

3. Reflecon on action – reflecting on a piece of design work you have done using ideas in the lectures.

4. Engagement with new digital modes of critical thinking - audio visual material, architectural memes, podcasts, etc.

These different critical approaches and positions will provide multiple, perhaps contradictory, insights into your chosen essay topic. In you essay you are required to undertake removed critical analysis of your case study plus your choice of one other from the above.

This will allow you to compare and contrast insights from two different critical approaches. The essay should include original (made by you) illustrations, photographs, and/or diagrams. All illustrations used within the essay should be captioned, including a reference to clarify authorship.
